Can you feel it?

Chickpea here. I've been deep down the rabbit hole of Rhythm Roller Skating since May of 2020. Little did I know when I brought home my first pair of skates in my early 40's, that it would fulfill my life in so many positive ways. That pivotal day helped me find my community, connections, confidence, voice, and purpose. I know what this journey has done for me and I've been dedicated to opening the door for others to enjoy rhythm skating no matter your age or demographic. Don't let anything stand in the way to experiencing the joys rhythm roller skating provides. This is your sign to learn now. While I have taught many kids, I have taught way more adults between the ages of 30-65. Let's roll for your soul.

Learn Rhythm Roller Skating.

Evolve your skill sets in 3 categories.

Let us decode roller skating for you. We'll guide you in ideas on how to stay balanced and in control on your roller skates. We highlight the key components that need to be in order to efficiently skate the skills. We find a variety of ways to say the same thing. So if the first explanations wasn't landing with you, we can try to understand it another way. We build and lean on community to expand on what we are learning through the video course materials. There's options to send in video for diagnosis and mindfulness tips to elevate this instruction vehicle into guided practice. This is your sign to start now. Let's Skate!

Roller Basics

Video Course

This course is for those that are straight out of the roller skate box beginners. It is also for skaters who have spent some time trying to figure it all out and are at a point where you'd like to fill in the gaps of knowledge and better understand basic skate skills. It's always a good idea to bring it back to the basics and get in full control of them. We get started in balance and posture to stay upright in skating. We’ll learn bubbles/swizzles, strides, turns & transitions, and a variety of stops. This class will help you learn how to skate with a focus on safety and control skating both forwards and backwards.

First we get you some control.

Foundations in Rhythm Skating

Video Course

Foundations in Roller Skating class, is where you'll develop essential skate skills to enhance your control and confidence on wheels. While we cover skills like bubbles, strides, stops, turns, pivots, spins, slalom patterns, and selected at random. Skaters may have the opportunity to express their focus areas to break through the struggle bus they may be on. In this class, the whole group is working on the same skills focus. We’ll start with beginner ideas around a skill focus and follow an evolution of modifications in movement to understand how to control each skill.

Then we teach how to have fun.

Rhythm Skate Choreography

Video Course

In the Rhythm Skate Choreography, participants will master a variety of rhythm skating routines and stepping patterns. The focus is learning the pattern/routine not so much getting in control of each skill. For control in each skill you will want to look at the  Foundations in Rhythm Skating class. We'll build a library of common rhythm routines we skate in rinks all across the USA and beyond.

Now we link it together adding your spice to the skate sauce.

What can you expect from learning with MOJOskaters?

We help people learn how to roller skate in a very safe and approachable way. Nobody wants to get hurt chasing fun and we are here to help you practice ideas to minimize that risk as much as possible. Once we help you learn how to control your skates through theory, mechanics, and guided practiced in basics, then we teach your how to really have fun on dancing it out in your wheely shoes:

Control in Basics

We cover theory and mechanics of roller skating and pass on key ideas to help you manipulate your skates. Our goal is for YOU to take your skates for a ride instead of crossing your fingers as your skates take you on a ride. You will learn how to fall, prevent from falling, making it go forwards and backwards, stopping, and turning around.

Flexible Classes

You can learn virtually through online courses, or in-person in Portland, Or, Beaverton, OR or the Philippines. You get to learn when it fits your schedule and at your own pace. You choose the space you learn in. In Beaverton, you will have access to $10 open skate with wifi to view the course material and have roller skate designated, indoor, and level space to work through the online course material and to practice at PDX Fieldhouse.

Personalization

After the basics, you get to design your skate journey. In recreational skating, there are no rules other than to have fun. Our interest is to help guide you towards the way that you want to skate. You can design your approach to skating and we'll help guide you to the most practical and fun way to get there.

Heather Chaney

"Even with my years of experience as a skater, I love how Chickpea immediately knew how to challenge me with something new that will continue to push my growth and skill as a skater! The class was fun, and was broken into chuncks of new material, mixed with reagular times for us students to just blissfully skate. You're amazing."

Kelsey Nickel

"Jennifer, I love the cones. They are restrictive so it really breaks down each move into a step by step process. I love getting to work with and learn from you at each session! You are attentive to the skating goals of each individual and care about each individual at a personal level as well. I appreciate you sharing your passion for skating with us and you continue to inspire me to keep going even though some moves can be hard to get down on the first try. I always look forward to joining you in skating thanks to the positive and encouraging environment you provide. Thank you!"

Bay

"By the end of the session, you can see the confidence on everyone's face! It's not easy to learn roller skating as an adult. Chickpea creates a safe place for everyone to try and be themselves"

Kelsey Sonefield

"Jennifer truly is a great teacher and has such a good energy about her. Any time she’s taught me anything, it hasn’t felt intimidating or condescending ~ it’s the right level of pushing someone and being kind and respectful of their fears! I would highly recommend taking a class from her if youre looking to start, or just improve your skills! I know I personally have a difficult time learning from watching tutorials, no matter how in depth they are. Jennifer always explains everything in a way I can wrap my head around and then further improve in!"

Devin Lee

"I liked that you were able to specifically “diagnose” what was missing from my movements and explain things to me in a way that I could totally understand. You went nice and slow and “layered” things on so I could learn at a slow pace (which is what I need!). I also feel like I walked away with specific things to practice."

Angie Birman

"Honestly, I would not have changed a thing. The pace was great--not too fast, not too slow. The class was a good size. There were enough people to feel like a group class, but not so many that you felt like you didn’t get enough time with the instructor. The instructions/lessons were clear and the corrections helpful. Everyone was nice and looks like everyone was having fun! I had a great time. Can’t wait to learn more."

You do not have to be young, fit, or have any prior experience to give roller skating a try at any age. This is your sign to choose fun, invest in your health, and connect with the most supportive and fun community out there.

The virtual lesson plan will allow you to save face and learn in the comforts of your space in a time that fits your schedule. With the video tutorials you can revisit the material where in an in-person class, you may be in the class feeling great, yet once you leave you forget what even happened and what to focus on or how to practice. The videos have the breakdown instructions as well as videos to drill along with me on the screen. In the videos, I'll explain an idea a number of different ways to help you understand.
